FUSD Superintendent Smith receives major award

Fontana Unified School District Superintendent Jane Smith was recently honored with one of the most prestigious awards in the field of education.

Smith, who will be retiring at the end of next month, was given the Marcus Foster Memorial Award during the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 12's Spring Awards Dinner on April 21 at the University of Redlands.

ACSA established the award to honor the memory of Marcus Foster, the influential former superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District.

Qualifications for the award point to someone who is on the cutting edge of school administration.  The candidate must be a skilled manager of change whose style involved broad community and professional involvement, a willingness to take risks to improve educational opportunities, creativity and willingness to try new ideas in reaching out to children, willingness to speak out on issues that impact children, and someone who respects everyone as a human being. Smith was regarded by ACSA as possessing all of these traits.

Smith has served the FUSD and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools for the past 25 years. During her tenure as superintendent, Smith's goal has been to bring stability, compassion, and direction to the FUSD.

Smith's leadership has been credited with providing a revitalization of the district in recent years. According to the California Department of Education, the district has five schools that are no longer considered Program Improvement schools.

Smith has served as superintendent for two years. The FUSD has already chosen her replacement, Cali Olsen-Binks, who will take over on July 1. Olsen-Binks is currently the FUSD's deputy superintendent for instructional services.
