F.A.B.E. members are honored

The Fontana Association for Bilingual Educators held its Annual Recognition Dinner on Saturday, April 19 at Cal State San Bernardino.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Barbara Flores, a university professor, lecturer, publisher of children's books, researcher, and president of the National Association for Bilingual Education.
Members were recognized for their service and dedication to the students and parents in the Fontana Unified School District.
Those receiving awards were:
-- Mercedes Walker, principal of Palmetto Elementary School, Administrator of the Year;
-- Linda Ureno-Arias, Date Elementary School, Teacher of the Year;
-- Veronica Escoto-Rodriguez, Oleander Elementary School, Paraprofessional of the Year;
-- Sheema Aamer, Oleander Elementary School, Parent of the Year.
Nancy Banales of Poplar Elementary School received the Cesar Chavez Lifetime Service Award.
Nominees for Administrator of the Year included Christina Nieves, District Language Development School; Sylvia Rivera, Poplar Elementary School; Jason Angle, North Tamarind Elementary School; Sergio Chavez, Redwood Elementary School; and Antonio Viramontes, Oleander Elementary School.
Nominees for Teacher of the Year included Norma Zavala, Stephanie Gonzalez, Citrus Elementary School; Gabriel Herrera, Joe Olague, Irene Sanchez, Alder Middle School; Eva Hernandez, Tokay Elementary School; Grace Arrellano, Poplar Elementary School; Estella Borrero, Oleander Elementary School; Enrique Roman, Redwood Elementary School; and Dr. Sybil Acevedo, Fontana A.B. Miller High School.
Nominees for Paraprofessional of the Year were: Maria Lira, Yesenia Lepe, Poplar Elementary School; Karla DeLoera, North Tamarind Elementary School; Sonia Mendoza, Palmetto Elementary School; Elsa Avila, Mango Elementary School; Mary Salas, Margie Chavez, Petra Ortega, Alder Middle School; Anita Sida, Citrus Elementary School; and Marcella Rutz, Redwood Elementary School.
Nominees for Parent of the Year included: Elvira Gonzalez, Sara Palmer Najar, Poplar Elementary School; Aqueda Cortez, North Tamarind Elementary School; Cindy Baez, Mango Elementary School; and Marisela Robles, Redwood Elementary School.
