Fohi baseball team is playing well against CBL foes

After a slow start, the Fontana High School baseball team has played very well in recent weeks to keep its CIF playoff hopes alive.

The Steelers have won five of six games to raise their record to 7-5 in the Citrus Belt League, 10-13 overall.

Last week, the Fontanans came through with a 3-1 victory over Yucaipa as Adam Huizar pitched very well, scattering seven hits and striking out three batters while allowing only one walk.

Fohi scored a run in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to secure the win.

Chris Ramirez provided the key hits on offense for the Steelers. He smashed a double and a single and drove in the team's three runs.

Nolan Mullaney and Jesse Martinez each went 2-for-4 and Juan Gutierrez was 1-for-2.

IN AN earlier game, Fohi squashed Eisenhower, 9-2, as Eddie Ortiz went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles, two runs, and two RBI.

Huizar swatted a home run and a single and scored two runs. Ramon Ramos singled twice and drove in a run, and Mullaney was 2-for-3 with two runs. Gutierrez doubled, Arturo Franco doubled and drove in two runs, and Martinez singled, scored twice, and knocked in a run.

Franco pitched well, allowing one hit in three innings.

In another game, Fohi toppled Redlands, 6-1, as Ramirez went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Martinez was 2-for-4 with a run. Gutierrez doubled and scored a run, Ortiz singled and scored a run, Franco singled and drove in a run, and Ivan Solis singled.

Huizar gained the pitching victory, giving up six hits and striking out seven batters in six innings of work. He did not allow any earned runs. Evan Aceves picked up the save.

Fohi downed Fontana A.B. Miller, 12-3, thanks to a seven-run explosion in the third inning.

Solis went 2-for-3 with a triple, single, and two runs for Fohi. Martinez was 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI. Other contributors were Ortiz (2-for-2, run, RBI), Gutierrez (2-for-3, two runs, RBI), Manuel Salgado (double, RBI), Huizar (1-for-2, run, RBI), Ramirez (1-for-3, run, two RBI), Franco (1-for-3, run), and Barbaro Acosta (single).

Mullaney was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits and two earned runs in six innings.

For Miller, Zac Fisher was the batting leader, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Fohi's only loss in the past six games was to first-place Redlands East Valley by a 2-0 margin. Mullaney pitched very well for the Steelers in that game.
