Garcia loses election

Former FUSD Board Member Leticia Garcia, pictured here in 2009, was unsuccessful in her attempt to gain a seat on the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Board.

Leticia Garcia, a former member of the Fontana School Board, was unsuccessful in her attempt to seek a seat on the San Bernardino County Board of Education in the Nov. 4 election.

Garcia ran for the Area D position and finished in second place out of three candidates, according to results posted by the San Bernardino County Elections Office.

Hardy Brown II, the incumbent, won the election with 14,748 votes (47.17 percent of the total).

Garcia received 11,064 votes (35.39 percent), while Sonia Fernandez had 5,454 votes (17.44 percent).

Area D encompasses the school districts of Rialto, Snowline, and the city of San Bernardino.

In 2010, Garcia was elected to the FUSD Board, but some of her actions created controversy. She and another trustee, Sophia Green, expressed opposition to the after school program operated by the City of Fontana. This caused a backlash which resulted in a recall election, and both Garcia and Green were removed from office in July of 2013.
