A Fontana church will be giving away 2,000 backpacks, school supplies, and prizes during the Fourth Annual Back to School Fair and Readiness Expo on Saturday, July 27.

The free event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ruth O. Harris Middle School, 11150 Alder Avenue in Bloomington.

The event is coordinated by Water of Life Church South Fontana.

There will be a free barbecue and free immunizations.  Children can also enjoy games at the event.

The first 2,000 students, grades K-8, will receive free backpacks and school supplies.

Booths will be provided by Home Depot, Fontana Police, San Bernardino County Fire, San Bernardino County Search and Rescue, Fitness 19, and many other groups.

"This is one of the ways we give back to our community," said Pastor Zac Coaston.  "It's part of our goal to reach 20,000 students by 2020."

So far, the event has reached close to 1,000 students, but the number of attendees has nearly doubled each year.

"We've given away backpacks, immunizations, school supplies, food, games, prizes, hair cuts, and anything else we can think of that can help students be successful — just to let them know that someone cares about their success," Coaston said.

The event has gained the attention of the Colton Joint Unified School District as a great example of community partnership and has been attended by school board members and school principals, Coaston said.
