Writing is very important to Kristian Castellanos.

In fact, when the student at Fontana A.B. Miller High School submitted a reflective essay for the Fontana Unified School District’s MaryAnn Workman Writing Showcase, his topic was simply: writing.

“My goal was to try to explain to the reader was writing is all about,” he said.

He certainly succeeded in his goal, because he took a second-place award for his work entitled “Paper Portrait,” and that was in addition to capturing a first-place award for a poem he composed entitled “Regretful Fall.”

Castellanos was one of many FUSD students whose talents were recognized during the district’s fifth annual showcase, which took place on April 24 at Truman Middle School.

Jason Angle, the coordinator of the event, praised the efforts of the hundreds of students who were honored, saying the overall quality of writing was “excellent.”

“Students throughout our district have been working on writing all year long, and this is their chance to show off what they have been producing,” Angle said.

Kyana Ballard, another Miller student, impressed the judges with her fictional account entitled “Birthday Wishes,” in which a 32-year-old woman is stabbed by a drunken man. The story has an unusual outcome, she said.

“The woman has been wanting this to happen her entire life, because she has a psychological disorder and everything around her is positive and she is negative,” Ballard said. “I put a twist on the story to make it seem like she was excited that she was dying.”

Nine-year-old Cassidee Gardner, a student at Shadow Hills Elementary School, was lauded for writing about a painful experience that could end up to be positive in “A Trip to the Doctor.”

“I wrote about going to the dentist, and how I didn’t like it and that it really hurt my teeth,” she said.

But, she added, a person can learn to appreciate a dentist, who is able to help treat and prevent cavities.

Zachary Chambers, a student at Summit High School, wrote an untitled story based on a video game in which a “guy saves a girl from a ghost.” He was surprised (and delighted) to be an award recipient.

“(Winning) is pretty awesome,” he said. “I didn’t think I was going to get this award. I just wrote an essay and turned it in.”

Another Summit student, Alexandra Mena, wrote a business letter entitled “Letter to Starbucks.”

“I asked them if they would send me a job application,” she said.

But then she added that she doesn’t really want to be a coffee maker; her goal in life is to become a pediatrician.
