A pedestrian died in a hit-and-run traffic collision in Rialto in the early morning hours of Aug. 30, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

At 2:50 a.m., Rialto Police Department officers responded to the scene of the incident at Merrill Avenue, east of Cedar Avenue.

A 72-year-old man was found in the middle of the street, and he was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 3:44 a.m.

Officers determined that the man was walking outside of a crosswalk from the south curb toward the north curb of Merrill when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Merrill. After the collision, the vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene in an unknown direction.

The investigation is ongoing and the Rialto P.D. is asking for anyone who may have information related to this incident to call (909) 820-2550 or anonymously through NIXLE at (855) 847-7247.
