Karen Busch was surprised and honored to be named the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year by the Fontana Unified School District.

"I wasn't expecting it," said Busch, who has been teaching for six years at Beech Avenue Elementary School. "I was running against 44 stellar teachers in the district."

During the April 1 School Board meeting, the Site Teachers of the Year were recognized for their outstanding work and dedication on behalf of the students of Fontana. From this exceptional group of teachers, David Creswell, associate superintendent of human resources, announced that Busch had earned the top honor.

“This year’s District Teacher of the Year has 16 years of teaching experience,” said Creswell. “At a young age, her parents instilled in her that education was very important so that she could have a better life. She knew she wanted to be a teacher from the time she was in second grade.”

Busch went on to graduate from Cal State San Bernardino and was hired by the FUSD.

“She has high expectations for student achievement, and also holds them accountable to being good citizens,” Creswell said. “She creates an environment of joyful learning. She believes that every child is capable of learning at high levels and truly does whatever it takes to make that happen."

Busch said she enjoys watching students learn, and she said she is also very focused on "teaching them compassion and kindness."
