A 55-year-old man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking on a street in Fontana last Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 1:34 a.m., the victim was walking northbound across the No. 1 lane of San Bernardino Avenue (from the center median), just east of Commerce Drive.
A person in an unknown vehicle was driving westbound on San Bernardino in the No. 1 lane and collided with the pedestrian.  The driver fled the scene.
The victim was identified as James Edward Sowell of Ontario.  He was originally reported to be 56 years old, but the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner's Division said he was a year younger.
The CHP is seeking the public's assistance in locating witnesses to this incident.
