Officers arrested a suspect on charges of assault and residential burglary after a foot pursuit on Oct. 10, according to the Fontana Police Department.

At about 5:30 a.m., officers responded to Motel 6 regarding a report of an assault. The suspect, later identified as Matthew Baiza, 33, of El Monte, fled before police arrived.

Officers located the suspect in the area of Marygold and Sierra avenues. The suspect was handcuffed, but was able to remove a handcuff and run. Officers chased the subject into an apartment complex in the 16900 block of Marygold.

The suspect entered an apartment where a male resident was inside. The suspect allegedly took money from the victim and climbed onto the victim’s balcony and onto the third story roof, police said.

Residents in the area directed officers to the roof. As they closed in on Baiza, he climbed onto a balcony of an adjacent apartment and hid, police said.

After a brief standoff, officers entered the balcony and took him into custody. The suspect was arrested and transported to West Valley Detention Center.
