Dear Editor:

I learned a lot about plants a few years ago when Diane Olivares taught a city-sponsored class on "Water Wise Gardening" at the Cypress Center. But for some unexplained reason, those classes were abruptly cancelled, even though several of us in the class had paid for more sessions in advance.

So, I was happy to discover that she is now teaching a similar class, once a week, at Foothill True Value Hardware Store, 15825 Foothill Boulevard, from 1-2 p.m. every Sunday, and it is FREE!

Diane has a degree in Ornamental Horticulture, so she can tell you the scientific name of any plants you want to know about, as well as their common names. She can advise you on lawn care, pest control, drought tolerant plants, garden designs, and any other gardening or plant questions you may have.

The classes are taught in the outdoor nursery department, with chairs provided, and in the shade. And True Value is giving away a free bag of red mulch to all who participate!

Apparently, Ms. Olivares has earned the name "Plant Nerd," according to True Valiue's flyer. But she lets us call her Diane!
