Last year, the Fontana A.B. Miller volleyball team won the Mountain Valley League championship, and this year the Rebels are off to a fine start as they seek another title.
Senior Darien Mann had 10 kills and 6 ace serves as the Miller ladies demolished Pacific, 3-0, in the league opener on Sept. 9 at the Rebels' gym.
"We're a little quicker on our feet, and I think we can do a lot better than last year," said coach Elizabeth Guzman. "We're more prepared and we have more experience."
Senior Jordan Hughes supplied 6 kills and 5 ace serves as the Rebels prevailed by scores of 25-11, 25-7, 25-11.
"The team has good chemistry," Hughes said. "We hope to get as far as we did last year. I think if we keep working together, we'll be perfectly fine, and maybe we'll even get farther."
The team has eight seniors, including setter Dana Manaloto, and their expertise was on full display against Pacific.
"We did really well today," Manaloto said. "We got enough reps for the hitters and passers, and our serves were consistent."
Guzman praised all of the players, including defensive specialist Ermelin Estrada, a junior who is one of the team captains.
The coach was also pleased that the Rebels turned in some fine efforts in pre-league action, including a second-place finish in their Steeltown Classic.
