The Fohi water polo players gathered for a photo after routing San Gorgonio to stay undefeated in San Andreas League competition.

Despite having a relatively young team, the Fontana High School water polo men have surged to the top of the San Andreas League standings.

The Steelers raised their league record to 7-0 by crushing San Gorgonio, 21-7, on Oct. 22.

"We did pretty well," said Ivan Cardenas, a senior leader for the Steelers. "We have some new freshmen, and they really stepped up this game. We worked really hard as a team, and that's what got us a win today."

Jonathan Zubiate, a sophomore, was one of the top offensive performers for Fohi.

"I think it went pretty well, but I'm sure we could have stepped it up a little more," he said.

Earlier this season, the Steelers stomped the Spartans, 12-1.

Other league wins by Fohi have been by scores of 12-2 and 17-4 over Granite Hills, 12-2 over Arroyo Valley, 20-1 over Eisenhower, and 13-5 over Summit.

The Steelers are hoping for their third straight San Andreas championship. They won the undisputed title in 2017 and tied Summit for the top spot last year.

"Our season is going smoothly," Zubiate said. "We can make it to CIF at this rate."
