The Fontana American Little League baseball all-stars captured the Senior Division District 71 championship on June 26.
The American squad, which had to battle its way up through the loser's bracket, edged Fontana Elks, 3-1, in the title-deciding game in the tournament at Red Hill Park in Rancho Cucamonga.
Back on June 24, American nudged Elks, 4-2, to force the final game.
Previously, American had used great pitching to stop Citrus twice, 6-0 and 5-1. American's only loss was to Elks, 5-4, on June 19.
----- IN OTHER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS:
• The Southridge 11-12 (Major Division) all-stars qualified for the semifinals of the District 71 tourney on Wednesday, July 3 at Bill Martin Park in Fontana.
Southridge took second place in pool play competition by conquering Alta Loma, 6-0, on June 26. In that game, Anthony Pardo slugged a home run, double, and single and Ashton Ramos slammed a double and a single and scored two runs. Elias Cruz did a great job in the pitching department.
• In the 9-10 Division, two Fontana teams -- Community and Southridge -- qualified for the semifinals on July 3 at Village Park in Fontana. Community took first place in Pool B competition thanks to three narrow victories, and Southridge was the second-place squad in Pool B.
