Fontana American

The Fontana American Senior Division baseball all-stars won the Section 8 championship.

In two straight double-elimination tournaments, the Fontana American Senior Division baseball all-stars found themselves in the difficult position of having to battle their way up through the loser's bracket. But both times, the American team ended up victorious.

On July 3, the Americans shut out Bloomington, 8-0, to win the championship of the Section 8 tourney at Red Hill Park in Rancho Cucamonga.

Anthony Torres pitched five shutout innings and Jose Saldana pitched the last two innings for the Fontana squad. The offensive attack was led by Andres Santana and Zenen Morales.

The previous day, American stayed alive with a 10-6 victory over Bloomington, forcing the final game. American ended up with four wins and one loss in the sectionals.

Previously, American triumphed in the District 71 tourney by advancing through the loser's bracket to defeat Fontana Elks in the last game.

----- THE AMERICAN all-stars advanced to the divisional tournament in Anaheim, where they lost their first game and then won in the second game.

American was edged, 6-5, by San Diego on July 6. Bobby Alvarez pitched well for six innings and Abran Romero had a big two-run single to put the locals up 5-3, but they could not hold on.

Then on July 7, American conquered Canyon Springs from Riverside, 4-1, as Saldana pitched six scoreless innings. Torres came in with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh and was able to secure the win with only one run scoring.

American scored all four of its runs in the first inning as Torres and Alvarez drove in runs and Chris Figueroa had a two-RBI single. Santana had two hits in the game, and Victor Lopez Jr. and Derek Bacajol also had hits.
