The Jurupa Hills Spartans have a favorite way of playing a football game -- jumping out to a quick lead, and never letting the opposition catch up.
This technique worked very well in the first round of the CIF Division 12 playoffs, as Jurupa Hills gained a 14-0 edge in the first quarter and sped to a 42-20 victory over Coachella Valley at the Spartans' field on Nov. 8.
Jurupa Hills, which lifted its record to 10-1, will advance to the second round on Nov. 15 against Rio Hondo Prep.
Trayton Cooper led the way for the Spartans by catching 7 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing 12 times for 82 yards and 3 TDs.
The Spartans started the game with a 72-yard scoring drive. Key plays were a 27-yard pass from Eric Marinez to Bryan Calderon and a 12-yard run by Cooper, setting up Cooper's 1-yard jaunt into the end zone.
After the Spartans' defense forced a punt, the home team marched in for another touchdown on a 2-yard blast by Cooper. A 20-yard run by Kamron Randell-Taylor helped set up the TD.
Coachella Valley scored a touchdown to draw within 14-7, but on the ensuing kickoff, Calderon returned the ball 70 yards to put the Spartans in great field position. They promptly capitalized when Marinez completed a 13-yard pass to Cooper for a touchdown and a 21-7 advantage.
The visitors came back with another TD, but Jurupa Hills expanded its lead to 28-13 when Marinez connected with Davieon Gambo for a 3-yard touchdown with just 3 seconds to go before halftime.
Coachella Valley kept trying to rally in the second half, but the Spartans were able to pull away and surpass the 40-point mark in a game for the sixth time this season.
Marinez ended up completing 11 of 18 passes for 140 yards. Sean McKenzie had 7 rushes for 56 yards. Jose Diaz kicked 6 of 6 PAT attempts.
Jurupa Hills will be moving on to Round 2 of the playoffs for the second straight year.
