Thanks to an exciting 27-26 victory over Rubidoux on Oct. 3, the Fontana A.B. Miller football team stayed in first place in the Mountain Valley League.

The Rebels raised their record to 3-0 in the league and 5-2 overall.

The game was tied at 20-20 before Eduardo Zaragoza ran in for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and Cody Ruiz kicked the extra point for a 27-20 Miller lead.

Rubidoux pushed across a TD in the closing minute but was unsuccessful on a two-point conversion attempt, enabling Miller to hold on for the dramatic win in the back-and-forth duel.

In the first quarter, Rubidoux went ahead 7-0 before Miller quarterback Peter Coleman scored a touchdown to make it 7-6. Coleman later completed an 8-yard pass to DJ Jackson and then ran in for a two-point conversion to put the locals on top 14-7 at halftime.

After the opponents tied the score in the third period, Coleman connected with Jackson for another touchdown for a 20-14 edge. Rubidoux then returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to tie the game again, setting up the wild finish.

Coleman ended up completing 5 of 7 passes (all to Jackson) for 62 yards, and he also ran 18 times for 58 yards.

Zaragoza carried the football 11 times for 82 yards and Jackson had 5 carries for 29 yards.

On defense, Deandre Richardson intercepted a pass and Jesse Ruiz recovered a fumble for Miller.

Oscar Fuentes Jr. made 7 solo tackles and 4 assists. Jackson had 4 tackles and 4 assists. Christopher Diaz had 2 tackles and 4 assists and Manuel Vega had 2 tackles and 2 assists. Medardo Sanchez had 1 tackle and 7 assists, Daniel Sanchez had 1 tackle and 6 assists, and Angel Millan had 1 tackle and 5 assists.
