After achieving the CIF championship in 2018, the Kaiser High School football team is continuing its winning ways in 2019.
The Cats, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Division 6 preseason poll, began the new year by crushing Sultana, 44-7, in non-league action on Aug. 23.
Gabriel Ortiz, a senior running back, turned in a terrific performance, gaining 183 yards in 10 carries and rushing for 3 touchdowns, including a 99-yarder. He also caught 2 passes for 39 yards and a TD.
Quarterback Trevian Tribble completed 5 of 11 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, and he also rushed 9 times for 94 yards and a TD.
Dustin Chaidez gained 43 yards in 4 carries and Marc Alvarez ran for 40 yards in 5 carries and scored a touchdown.
Josiah Finnell had 2 catches for 18 yards and Chaidez had a 10-yard reception.
Chaidez also played well on defense, making 6 solo tackles and 3 assists. Ortiz had 5 tackles and 1 assist, while Avery Taylor had 3 tackles and 5 assists.
Joseph Glenn intercepted 2 passes and also had 2 tackles and 1 assist. Plus, he was 6-for-6 on PAT kicks.
Taylor and Matthew Lua both had sacks, and Angel Aguiar blocked a punt.
The Cats, who rolled to a 23-0 lead at halftime, will host Aquinas in their home opener on Friday, Aug. 30.
